Stargate - Once upon a day on P3A-192
A Stargate battle report using the club’s conversion of 'Legends of the Old West' from GW Historical.
Colonel McCarthy’s After Action Report:
We had received intel from the Tok’ra that a Tollan emissary had been captured and taken to P3A-192. Here he was to be ‘impregnated’ with a Goa’uld symbiote and then sent to infiltrate Tollan society. The Tollan had asked if Earth could assist them in his rescue. SG-13, SG-21 and SG-16 were allocated the mission.
Our brief was to rescue the emissary and if at all possible bring back the symbiote ‘tank’.![]()
SG-21 and SG-16 were to secure the gate and hold it from the expected Jaffa patrols while SG-13 were to infiltrate the temple area and rescue the Tollan.
The action took place on two 4×4 tables using the LOTOW adaptation developed by Rich Jones for use at the club. The SG teams had 10 moves to rescue the Tollan and to hold the gate. Success or failure would determine the next series of scenarios played. The rules are quick enough to allow each player to play at least 2 scenarios a night, making a mini linked campaign (or episode as we call them) possible during a club night. The campaign rules have been adapted for SG action which means that your ‘team’ can advance in skills and experience and gain ‘money’ (we call them Neilson points, as the rating system for TV shows in the States is the Neilson rating and this determines if there is going to be another series commissioned).
We were confident of holding the gate and DHD for the required time but had underestimated the quantity of Jaffa that appeared to retake the gate. Tok’ra intel had appeared to have underestimated the amount of Jaffa on the planet at the time.
SG-13 moved into position around the temple. However their position was compromised by a Jaffa guard who was armed with a Zat and proceeded to open fire on the group.
Meanwhile the Jaffa around our position began to close and we opened fire on them. Laying down suppressive fire we managed to stave off their initial assault as a number of them headed for available cover. One particularly ferocious Jaffa attempted to engage the personal guarding the DHD.
SG-13 managed to push the defending Jaffa back while the classic ‘fire and manoeuvre’ tactic saw team member flank the Jaffa.
This left them in a prime position to interrupt the ceremony when they got the order. At the gate our position had taken a turn for the worse as more Jaffa were closing on our position. Indeed they had overrun our flank positions and we found ourselves in close quarter combat with a number of them. However this resulted in them being driven back to the surrounding area. For now the gate area was secure.
In game terms the action around the temple was in the balance. With only a little time left the SG team found themselves in a good position, but possibly lacking the time to complete their mission. The gate action had hung in the balance, the greater number of Jaffa had forced the SG team to half their original number. Casualties in the game are removed from the table but their exact status is not rolled for until after the game. However when the team is down to half strength it has to make a check (in the LOTOW rules this is called a ‘run for the hills’ check, in our conversion it is called a ‘crank up the Stargate’ check for the SG teams and a ‘run to your God’ check for the Jaffa. The SG team were lucky to keep passing their check. Meanwhile they had whittled down the Jaffa team to half strength and they failed their first check. This saw them retreating from the table.
SG-13 received the signal to close in on the ceremony as time was running out. One team member was put out of action and I received the message that they may have to retreat. It was at this moment that Private Crouch revealed his position and assaulted the temple.
This final assault was enough to drive the defending Jaffa away from the temple. SG-13 secured the Tollan emissary and the symbiote tank. I received word that they were heading back to the gate.
SG-13 had managed to force a timely ‘run to your God’ check on the Jaffa around the temple. This meant the SG teams had won both games. The next game was to be a 4 player game on a 5×4 table played length ways. SG21 and SG16 team were to hold the gate and open the wormhole while SG-13 were to make their way down the table to the gate. The Jaffa teams were to deploy down the long edges of the board and had to stop the SG teams making it back through the gate.
We dug in around the gate and SG-13 were in view, making their way towards the gate. It was at this point that the Jaffa appeared on both our flanks, they had consolidated their numbers and were intent on ambushing our returning personnel.
Again our position seemed to be compromised. SG-13 were taking some heavy fire, however they could not afford to become pinned down or even make the best use of the cover, as we were ourselves coming under heavy fire at the gate area. In fact Jaffa had managed to take control of the DHD. It was at this point that SG-13 made very good use of the FN P-90 ‘s abilities. They laid down interlocking field of fire and managed to neutralise 3 Jaffa in a very short time.
SG-13 found themselves in a difficult position. However the smaller Jaffa team who were armed with a majority of short range Zat weapons were forced to break cover. This left them open to the P-90 template attacks. This resulted in the unfortunate Jaffa player yet again losing enough figures to force a ‘run to your God’ check on his next turn.
The remaining Jaffa that were pursuing Sg-13 retreated and they quickly moved into position with us in the ruined building where we laid a continual stream of fire onto the remaining Jaffa defending the DHD. This fire was enough to drive them back into nearby cover. This enabled us to activate the gate and return back the SGC. I am please to report that all the injuries received proved to be non fatal and should see all members of all the teams back in action in a short while. The symbiote tank has been sent to Area 51.
All personnel involved in the operation are to be congratulated.
Again one Jaffa player was unfortunate to fail their first check. Once this had happened it was a case of sitting back and using the superior number of SG members to force the remaining Jaffa to retreat. If this had been a ‘real’ Stargate episode I am sure it would quickly become a fan favourite, unless of course you have Goa’uld sympathies!
